Ann McCoy received her B.F.A. from the University of Colorado in 1969 and an M. A. in sculpture and drawing from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1972. Her first works were wooden sculptures of mountains; later, she made cast resin sculptures of icebergs. In the early 1970s, after she abandoned sculpture for monumentally scaled drawings done in colored pencil, her success came fast. By the mid 1970s she was a nationally acclaimed artist with a number of solos hows to her credit. In 1974 McCoy first exhibited drawings of underwater explorations, for which she is largely known today. A scuba diver since 1968, McCoy works from photographs of the plant and animal life of the subaquatic world, creating drawings and hand-colored lithographs distinctive for their meticulous detail and surrealistic mood

2009   Pont Aven School of Art, France. Taught a seminar on Joseph Beuys and delivered a lecture on Beuys at the Hamberger Banhof in Berlin.

2006   Seminar on Goethe’s Color Theory, Sarah Lawrence College, New York

2005   KHOG, New Delhi, lecture on “The Death and Transformation of the King”. Gave a lecture on cultural transformation through archetypal symbolism, funded by the Asian Cultural Council.

2001-2            Curated an exhibition of four photographers called “The ETHERS’, at the Trynitarska Tower Museum of Contemporary Spiritual Art, in Lublin, Poland. This project was funded by two grants from the Trust for Mutual Understanding.

2002   Gave a lecture at Bennington College entitled: Art History and the History of Consciousness.

1980-2000, Barnard College, Visiting Artist and Associate. Taught a drawing class and seminar working in the collections of the museums of New York City.  Class included lectures on Native American, Egyptian, African, contemporary, Asian and Greco-Roman art.  Lectures from different tribes were guest teachers.  The class was featured in the first ten minutes of the award winning film Keep the River on Your Right: A Modern Cannibal Tale.  The film was shown at the Museum of Modern Art and won the Amsterdam Film Festival, the Hamptons Film Festival and the Los Angeles New Spirit Award. At Barnard, McCoy worked with different departments at the college to create projects between departments for independent study students.  These included the Jewish studies Messianic Traditions class, the anthropology department, and Women’s Studies.  The class included team teaching with members of several Native American nations, and African tribes.
